MNDOT Update: Highway 33 Roundabout project begins May 21 in Cloquet

Highway 33 roundabout project begins May 21 in Cloquet

DULUTH, Minn. —The Minnesota Department of Transportation will begin a roundabout construction project Monday, May 21 on Hwy 33 in Cloquet. Motorists will encounter shoulder closures on northbound and southbound Hwy 33 and also on the ramp from southbound Interstate 35 to Hwy 33. The shoulder closures are necessary while crews construct bypasses that will be used during construction of the roundabout.

The project is expected to be completed in October 2018

The finished roundabout will improve safety and mobility.

Roundabouts improve safety when compared to conventional intersections. A study (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) of 23 intersections converted to roundabouts, shows a decrease in total crashes by 39 percent, a decrease in injury crashes of 76 percent and a dramatic 89 percent decrease in fatal crashes.
